Machu Picchu isn’t just a destination – it’s a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Whether you're an adrenaline-loving trekker or someone who dreams of gazing at stunning landscapes from a cozy train window, there’s a route to fit your style. Here's how to get to Machu Picchu while soaking in all the incredible scenery Peru has to offer.

Book Your Machu Picchu Tickets

There are three different Machu Picchu circuits, each offering a unique way to explore the iconic site. Your choice of ticket depends on what you want to see and experience. Book your Machu Picchu Tickets here.

  • Circuit 1: This ticket allows access to all the main buildings and ruins of Machu Picchu, including the famous Intihuatana stone. It is recommended for those who want a complete experience.

  • Circuit 2: This ticket includes access to the agricultural sector of Machu Picchu, which features terraces and irrigation canals. It is perfect for those interested in the agriculture and engineering techniques of the Incas. This circuit gives you the “postcard” photo of Machu Picchu from the terraces that you see everywhere.

  • Circuit 3: This ticket gives access to the scenic Huayna Picchu mountain, where you can hike up to get a stunning view of Machu Picchu from above. Note that this hike is only recommended for experienced hikers due to its steep and narrow paths.

Step 1: Getting to Cusco

Before heading to Machu Picchu, you'll start your journey in Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire. Most travelers arrive by plane, with frequent flights available from Lima (Peru's capital) to Cusco. Grab a window seat for jaw-dropping views of the Andes as you land!

While in Cusco, give yourself at least a day or two to acclimatize to the altitude and check out the phenomenal sights, like the San Pedro Market and the vibrant Plaza de Armas. Check out our Cusco City Guide for accommodations, restaraunt recommendations, and things to do!

Step 2: Choose Your Scenic Route to Machu Picchu

Option 1: The Scenic Train Ride

For unbeatable comfort and epic views, hop on a train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, the gateway town to Machu Picchu. Two of the most popular train services – PeruRail and Inca Rail – offer large windows designed to showcase the jaw-dropping scenery.

Both train services offer different classes to fit your budget, from practical seating to luxury experiences complete with gourmet meals and live Andean music. We took the Vistadome both ways, which cost a little more but I enjoyed the show that they put on during the ride. If you happen to be traveling one of the ways at night though, you may as well save the money and opt for the cheaper train since you won't be able to see the views well in the dark.

Option 2: The Adventurous Treks

If you're an avid hiker and want to experience the Sacred Valley up close, trekking to Machu Picchu is for you. These scenic routes will immerse you in Peru’s beauty. I didn't have enough time to do any of these hikes, but I've included some guides that you can follow if you're interested!

Option 3: By Bus or Taxi to Ollantaytambo

If you're catching the train from Ollantaytambo, you'll need to travel there first. It’s a picturesque 1.5-2 hour drive from Cusco, but if you have more time, travel by bus or taxi to explore these stops on the way:

  • Chinchero – A charming Andean village known for its vibrant markets, ancient Incan terraces, and breathtaking mountain views, offering a glimpse into traditional Quechua culture.

  • Moray – A stunning archaeological site featuring circular Incan terraces, believed to have been an agricultural laboratory.

  • Salt Mines of Maras – A mesmerizing grid of thousands of traditional salt mine ponds cascading down the mountainside, producing salt using ancient techniques passed down since Incan times.

  • Ollantaytambo Ruins - a fascinating example of well-preserved Incan architecture surrounded by insane mountain landscapes.

Step 3: The Final Journey to Machu Picchu

Once you reach Aguas Calientes, you’re almost there! Here’s how to complete the last leg of your epic adventure:

  • Take a Scenic Bus Ride - Board one of the buses that zigzag up the mountain to Machu Picchu's entrance. The misty cloud forest and panoramic views make the ride as thrilling as the destination.

  • Hike Up the Trails (if you have the energy) - For adventurous souls who want one more challenge, there are hiking trails that'll lead you to the entrance.

Tour Guide and Expedition Companies

Whether you're looking for a seamless, stress-free experience or want expert knowledge to enrich your adventure, hiring a tour guide or booking with an expedition company can be well worth it. These companies handle everything from permits to logistics, making your trip to Machu Picchu smooth and unforgettable. Since we wanted to see as much as possible in the few days we were there, we booked a 2 day tour that included multiple spots throughout the Sacred Valley, a luxury hotel in Aguas Calientes, and Machu Picchu all with a knowledgeable tour guide.

Top Recommended Companies for Treks and Tours

  • Fly Cusco - This company is the one that we booked our trip through. They have plenty of different types of tours that you can choose from depending on what you’re interested in. I originally found them through a Viator listing that has great reviews, but I booked directly through their website and they gave me a discount. I thought the tour was really well planned, the accommodations and transportation was really comfortable, and we got to see and learn a lot.

  • Alpaca Expeditions - This highly-rated company stands out for its exceptional service and attention to detail. They cater to your needs while offering sustainable treks through some of the most beautiful parts of the Sacred Valley.

  • Salkantay Trekking - A top-rated adventure company specializing in guided treks. Known for exceptional service, expert guides, and sustainable tourism, they offer unforgettable hiking experiences through the Andes.

Why Book a Guide or Tour Company?

Professional guides share fascinating stories and insights into the history, culture, and environment of Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley. From handling permits to navigating transportation, these companies make sure your trip runs smoothly, and take the stress out of planning. Trekking in high-altitude or rugged terrain is easier with knowledgeable guides and support staff ensuring your well-being.

Pro tip: Book your tours or guides well in advance, especially during peak season (May to September), as spots for treks like the Classic Inca Trail fill up quickly!

Pro Tips for an Unforgettable Adventure

  • Plan Ahead - Train tickets and permits for the Inca Trail can sell out months in advance, especially during peak season (May–September). If you’re going during the rainy season like I did, I would suggest booking multiple days at Machu Picchu if you can. Especially if you are looking to get the iconic shot with Machu Picchu. You can book different circuits so you get to see something different each day.

  • Be Patient - The weather changes every 8-10 minutes, so be patient if there is heavy fog or rain on the forecast. The weather app is not always accurate, and it is worth waiting a couple hours if you have the time. When we arrived at 7:00am, the entire mountain was covered in thick fog, but we waited for about 1.5 hours and were able to get great photos with the ancient city.

  • Pack Smart - Whether you’re trekking or taking the train, pack light but carry essentials like sunscreen, water, and waterproof layers. If you’re backpacking or have a big pack, you can leave it at your hotel in Aguas Calientes, or they also rent out lockers at the base of Machu Picchu.

  • Carry Some Soles on you - Make sure to have some Soles on you for tipping your guides or for using the bathrooms.

  • Enjoy Every Moment - Getting to Machu Picchu is as magical as being there—stay present and soak in the once-in-a-lifetime views.
